Overview of Income Tax Returns Filed on the New E-Filing Portal

As of December 27, 2021, the Income Tax Department's new e-filing portal has seen over 4.67 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) submitted. On December 27 alone, more than 15.49 lakh ITRs were filed, a number expected to rise as the due date of December 31, 2021, approaches.

Breakdown of ITR Categories

Among the 4.67 crore ITRs filed for the Assessment Year (AY) 2021-22, the distribution across different ITR forms is as follows:

  • ITR1: 2.5 crore (53.6%)
  • ITR2: 41.7 lakh (8.9%)
  • ITR3: 50.25 lakh (10.75%)
  • ITR4: 1.17 crore (25%)
  • ITR5: 5.18 lakh
  • ITR6: 2.15 lakh
  • ITR7: 0.43 lakh

Significantly, over 48.19% of these returns were submitted via the online ITR form available on the portal, while the remainder were uploaded using ITRs generated from offline software utilities.

Verification and Processing of Returns

Out of the filed returns, over 3.91 crore have undergone verification. Notably, more than 3.35 crore of these were verified through Aadhaar-based One Time Password (OTP) authentication. In just the last three days, 27.7 lakh Aadhaar OTP requests have been made on the e-filing portal.

To date, more than 2.88 crore e-verified ITRs have been processed, and over 1.07 crore refunds for AY 2021-22 have already been issued.
